Two Distinct Modes of Climate Responses to the Anthropogenic Aerosol Forcing Changes

چکیده
Abstract Unlike greenhouse gases (GHGs), anthropogenic aerosol (AA) concentrations have increased and then decreased over the past century or so, with timing of peak concentration varying in different regions. To date, it has been challenging to separate climate impact AAs from that due GHGs background internal variability. We use a pattern recognition method, taking advantage spatiotemporal covariance information, isolate forced patterns for surface ocean associated atmospheric variables all-but-one forcing Community Earth System Model ensembles. find aerosol-forced responses are dominated by two leading modes, one historical increase future decrease global mean (dominated Northern Hemisphere sources) other transition primary sources AA west east also extratropical regions tropical In particular, effect, some extent compensating exhibits zonal asymmetry temperature salinity responses. show this effect dominates total during recent decades, e.g., 1967–2007.

Direct radiative forcing of anthropogenic organic aerosol
[1] This study simulates the direct radiative forcing of organic aerosol using the GFDL AM2 GCM. The aerosol climatology is provided by the MOZART chemical transport model (CTM). The approach to calculating aerosol optical properties explicitly considers relative humidity–dependent hygroscopic growth by employing a functional group– based thermodynamic model, and makes use of the size distribut...
متن کاملPhysical Climate Response to a Reduction of Anthropogenic Climate Forcing
Recent research indicates that the warming of the climate system resulting from increased greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions over the next century will persist for many centuries after the cessation of these emissions, principally because of the persistence of elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations and their attendant radiative forcing. However, it is unknown * Corresponding autho...
متن کاملMulti-model simulations of aerosol and ozone radiative forcing due to anthropogenic emission changes during the period 1990–2015
Over the past few decades, the geographical distribution of emissions of substances that alter the atmospheric energy balance has changed due to economic growth and air pollution regulations. Here, we show the resulting changes to aerosol and ozone abundances and their radiative forcing using recently updated emission data for the period 1990–2015, as simulated by seven global atmospheric compo...

[1] The equilibrium climate effect of direct radiative forcing of anthropogenic black carbon (BC) is examined by 100-year simulations in the Goddard Institute for Space Studies General Circulation Model II-prime coupled to a mixed-layer ocean model. Anthropogenic BC is predicted to raise globally and annually averaged equilibrium surface air temperature by 0.20 K if BC is assumed to be external...
